International Car Shipping Requirements

When it comes to an international move, you can’t just move a car overseas. You'll need to prepare a few documents for the authorities so you don't get into trouble.

First of all, you'll need to ship a car from a Port of Entry. When you've selected the right one to ship a vehicle from, you'll need to provide them with export documents at least 72 hours before the actual car shipping date.

One of the documents you'll need to send them is the original certificate of title for your car. You're allowed to send in a certified copy, which can make overseas car shipping easier. Whichever one you choose, you'll need to send in 2 more copies of the document as well.

Does your vehicle have a lien on it? Then you'll also need to request an official letter from the vehicle lienholder. This letter will clearly state that you're allowed to transport a car out of the United States.

The lienholder letter must include the following information about the car you’re shipping overseas:

• Make

• Model

• Year

• VIN

Another document you'll need is the US Customs & Border Protection Vehicle Export Cover Sheet. This is a detailed sheet where you have to note the full description of your car, as well as information for the shipper/exporter and agent/broker. You'll also need to jot down vehicle transportation information such as the vessel, export date, port of unlading, and your final destination.

International Car Shipping Costs

How much does it cost to have a car shipped overseas? As you may have guessed, it's not a straightforward answer.

You have to take into consideration where you're starting from, if you need domestic car shipping as well, the distance of your domestic auto shipping order, and where your final car shipping destination is located. In addition, individual auto transportation companies will have their own set prices for their services.

Below are some other costs which may be involved in international car shipping.

Marine Insurance

You never know if anything will happen to your vehicle while it's being shipped internationally. To protect your investment, you should highly consider getting marine car insurance.

Many vehicle shipping companies will have this as an add-on option and your car insurance provider may also offer it as well. If you're in the unlucky position where neither party offers marine insurance, you'll have to do additional research to purchase an automobile marine insurance policy from another company.

Customs Duty

Whenever you ship anything overseas, it may be subject to a customs tax. Shipping a car is no exception. You need to get in touch with the port in your destination country to see exactly what custom fees they charge for overseas car shipping. Typically, you can expect this amount to be a certain percentage of your car's value.

Destination Charges

Once your car is in your destination country, it needs to be unloaded and sent through customs. Since by law you're not allowed to do this yourself, you'll have to hire a customs agent or use one that's provided through your vehicle shipping company. On average, these agents will add around $500 extra to your bill.

Additional Fees

Our auto shipping experts will let you know approximately how much international car shipping services will cost. In most cases, they'll also provide a list of additional fees and/or taxes. Always allow a little more in your budget than what you’re quoted so you'll be ready if any unexpected car shipping costs pop up.

As you can see, international car shipping costs may be vastly different from one customer to another. This is why it's always a good idea to get an international auto shipping quote from not just one company, but several.

International Car Shipping Procedures And Process

We've already covered the documents you need to ship your car. Your next step is getting in touch with a car shipping company. You'll want to wash your vehicle and clean the inside, as customs agents will inspect your car for things like pests. Do note that you won't be able to ship moving boxes in your car. Car moving must be separate from moving your belongings when headed overseas.

The car transporter company will call you to discuss other ways to prepare your car such as how much gas should be in the tank. Usually, this is 1/4th of the way full. You'll also sort out any documents you need to fill out and send in before moving your vehicle across international borders.

On your moving date, you'll either bring your car to the Port of Entry or the car shipping company will dispatch a driver to come get your vehicle and bring it to the port for you. Either way, you'll need to have a dock receipt before your vehicle is loaded at the Port of Entry.

While your car is in transit, the auto transport company will provide you with ways to track its progress. For example, you'll be able to track it on one of their pages. Once your car is shipped to its destination country and has gone through customs, you'll be able to sign for your vehicle and pick it up.
