Everything You Should Know About Motorcycle Transport

In the United States, around 8% of all households have at least 1 motorcycle. This isn’t a huge surprise, considering what a thrill riding one can be!

Naturally, if you’re one of these bike owners, you won’t want to leave it behind when you move. But when you’re relocating somewhere far away, it’s either not feasible and/or it’d be too expensive to ride all the way there.

In that case, you should think about using motorcycle transport. This takes a huge burden off your shoulders, which can relieve a lot of stress for your upcoming move.

How Much Does Shipping Cost for Motorcycle Transport?

Every situation will be unique, which means we can’t give you exact shipping costs. However, what we can do is give you some general guidelines.

Usually, if you’re traveling under 1,000 miles, motorcycle transport will cost you between $180 to $300. And if you’re going over 1,000 miles, it’ll cost between $350 to $700.

Of course, these are very generalized estimates. Plus, as you can see, the ranges are quite large.

So understandably, you’ll want to learn more about the various aspects of vehicle shipping so you know what to expect. In addition, you’ll feel more relaxed about the process if you have more information.

Types of Shipping Available

Let’s start off with the types of shipping that are available for motorcycle transport.

There are 2 main ways you can ship your bike: open or enclosed carriers. Find out more about each below, including the pros and cons.

Open carrier shipping is when your motorcycle is loaded onto a huge hauler with multiple other vehicles. This allows drivers to ship a large number of vehicles at once, which keeps prices down, as they’re able to do a number of pickups and dropoffs with one trip.

What also makes open carrier shipping cheaper is the fact that there are lots of open hauler truckers around. With this much competition, there’s sure to be a driver within your price range. Plus, they’ll be more likely to accommodate your moving schedule.

However, a drawback of using open carrier shipping is that your motorcycle will be completely exposed to the elements while it’s being transported.

If you use a reputable auto transport company, their truckers will be well-trained and experienced enough to know how to transport your motorcycle with minimal to no damage. But still, inclement weather can damage your bike.

In any case, the drivers always have an up-to-date insurance policy with a minimum of $100,000. This means that if something does damage your motorcycle, you’ll get fairly compensated.

Your other choice for motorcycle transport is enclosed carrier shipping. These haulers can carry much fewer vehicles, which means prices will be more expensive.

There are also fewer truckers available, so this will drive prices up even more. It also means you’ll have to be more flexible on when your motorcycle is picked up and delivered, as there won’t be as many drivers to choose from.

But what you’ll get is peace of mind with the price you pay. Because your motorcycle will be locked away in an enclosed carrier for the entire duration of the trip, it’ll be protected from the elements. It’ll also deter thieves since they can’t see what valuables are inside.

What Affects Pricing?

From reading the above sections, you’ll already know that choosing either open or enclosed carrier shipping will affect pricing, considering each has different availability.

But what else will affect pricing? Let’s explore these factors below.

You might’ve already guessed that the farther you’re traveling, the more you’ll pay. However, auto transport companies generally charge less per mile after a certain threshold. This is usually 1,000 miles.

If your pickup and delivery locations are in rural areas, or areas that are difficult to get to, expect to be charged more.

On the other hand, if you pick major metropolitan areas, it’ll be a lot cheaper. Not only are they easier to get to, but more drivers are available in these areas.

If you live somewhere rural, to keep costs down, you can consider riding out to the pickup location and riding to your final destination after your motorcycle is delivered.

There are certain times of the year where vehicle shipping services are more in demand. During these times, you can expect your motorcycle transport cost to be more.

For example, “snowbirds” will “migrate” to Florida during the winter to escape the cold. So winter is a time when auto transport services can be hard to book.

Wintertime usually comes with bad weather and fewer daylight hours, which means transportation will be slower as well.

In general, if you want more availability and better prices, you should aim to transport your motorcycle in the spring. More specifically, early March is optimal.

Fall is a good time for vehicle shipping too. While you should avoid September due to large numbers of university students moving to their dorms, October and November are great choices.

To keep prices lower, you should opt for either economy or standard shipping. While it can take up to 5 business days for a trucker to come pick up your motorcycle, it can be worth it if you have a tight budget.

However, if you simply can’t wait and need shipping services on short notice, you can choose expedited shipping instead.

In this case, a driver can come either on the same day or the next. You’ll have to pay quite a bit more for this service, but it’s worth it in situations where you need your motorcycle at the destination pronto.

The Nexus Auto Transport Experience

If you want motorcycle transport services, then you’ll want to work with Nexus Auto Transport. We’ve been around for years and have experience transporting vehicles as small as motorcycles to ones as big as trailers.

Here’s what to expect if you choose us.

We’ll always start off every customer with a free, no-obligation quote. This puts things more in your control since you’ll be able to make a more comfortable and confident decision.

To get a quote, you need to tell our agent or fill out an online form with some information. This includes:

  • Starting location
  • Ending location
  • Type of vehicle (in this case, a motorcycle)
  • Pickup date (you can fill in “don’t know yet” as an option)

This info is enough for us to give you not only accurate quotes, but also approximate pickup dates.

If the quotes we’ve given you are suitable, you can then schedule the pickup appointment. To do this, we need your full name, pickup and delivery addresses, and motorcycle details (such as make, model, and VIN number).

Lucky for you, there’s no upfront payment! But you will have to pay a $75 refundable deposit. This will go toward the final amount.

When the driver is going to pick up your motorcycle, we’ll call and email you with approximately when they’ll arrive.

You’ll go through an inspection of your motorcycle. Any damage is noted down.

Then, you’ll sign the Bill of Lading and receive a copy, and the driver will load your bike. You can then keep track of where your motorcycle is by checking our website or contacting the trucker directly.

Upon delivery, you’ll have a walkthrough of the motorcycle again. This is to double-check that no damage was sustained while your bike was being transported.

Once you’re both satisfied with the inspection, you’ll then sign the Bill of Lading and get a copy.

What if your bike’s been damaged while in transit? Then no worries. The driver will file an insurance claim on your behalf and you’ll receive fair compensation to fix things up.
