The Ultimate Guide on How to Ship SxS, UTVs, ATVs, and 4-Wheelers From State to StateFebruary 10, 2021
Did you know that there are over 1.2 million ATV owners in the US? Throw in the additional owners for side by sides (SxS), UTVs, and 4-wheelers, and you can bet that there’s a large population of off-roading lovers in the nation!
If you’re part of this crowd, then you’ll want to bring your vehicle(s) along with you, no matter where you go. Not only are they expensive, but they’re probably also very precious to you.
So how can you move them safely to your destination? With vehicle shipping, of course!
If you don’t know the first thing about vehicle shipping service, not to worry. In this article, we’ll discuss everything you need to know about shipping SxS, UTs, ATVs, and 4-wheelers.
Your Choices for Vehicle Shipping
First of all, you’re probably wondering about the types of ATV and UTV shipping available to you. Below, we’ll outline the choices available to you.
Open Vehicle Shipping
One of the most common ways to transport vehicles of all sizes is through open vehicle shipping. This type of car shipping involves a trailer that’s essentially just a wire frame, usually with 2 stacked rows or more.
The main reason why many people opt for open vehicle shipping over enclosed is that there are lots more truckers.
This helps you out in 2 ways. The first benefit is that it’s much easier to book appointment times.
And the other is that prices aren’t as expensive, since there are plenty of drivers to keep the costs competitive. Also, because they can haul a large number of vehicles on their trailers, this keeps prices lower as well.
The major disadvantage to open haulers is that your vehicle is out, exposed to the elements. But considering that ATVs, UTVs, and the likes are created for rough outdoor usage, this shouldn’t be a problem.
Plus, this service offers you full insurance on your off-road vehicle. The minimum insurance coverage is $100,000.
This means that if anything happens to your ATV while it’s in transit, you won’t have to pay out of pocket to have it fixed. The shipping company will be responsible for it all.
So for those of you who want to transport your SxS on a budget, open vehicle shipping is your best bet. You’ll have the best chances of getting the pickup and dropoff times you want, plus it won’t cost you a fortune either!
Enclosed Vehicle Shipping
Your other choice is enclosed vehicle shipping. This is where your 4-wheeler is put into a hauler where it’s completely sheltered, meaning it won’t have to endure things like wind, rain, or snow.
It sounds like it’s a much better choice than open vehicle shipping. However, it does come with some disadvantages when compared with open auto transport.
There are far fewer drivers for enclosed shipping, which means it can be harder to find one that’ll accommodate your schedule. So if you have a schedule you can’t waver from, this might not be a good choice.
The smaller number of truckers also means that you’ll have to pay more for their services. This is because there’s less competition and also, they can fit fewer cars in the hauler when compared to an open one.
Both open and enclosed vehicle shipping offer you full insurance. So you’ll enjoy the same insurance benefits here as well.
So if you want better peace of mind when transporting your off-road vehicle, you’ll get it by choosing enclosed vehicle shipping.
The above 2 types of shipping are regarding how your off-road vehicle is transported. For the next 3 sections, we’ll discuss your choices for how quickly it’s moved.
At the lowest tier is economy shipping. This will take the longest for your vehicle to be in transit. However, it’s also the cheapest option!
If you’re flexible with the pickup time, then we highly recommend going with economy shipping. The driver will come get your ATV within 1 to 5 business days. Then, they’ll be on their way with the regular shipping time.
Economy shipping can be well worth your money if you schedule this service way ahead of time for your move.
Standard shipping will narrow down your pickup window a little more. Instead of 1 to 5 business days, it’s 1 to 3. Because of this, it’s slightly more expensive than economy shipping.
This is the perfect middle ground between slower but cheaper shipping and much quicker but significantly more expensive shipping.
Expedited shipping is the absolute quickest type of transport you can get for your UTV. The driver can come on almost an instant’s notice! In most cases, they can come either the same or the next day as when you request their services.
Because of this convenience, expedited shipping will cost a lot more than the other 2 shipping options. However, it can be a real lifesaver in cases where you’re left without a vehicle transporter and you need to adhere to a schedule.

From there, either our site (if you’re online) or our agent (if you’ve called) will give you quotes and estimated delivery dates.
Set a Pickup Date
Did you like the sound of the quote you got? Then great, you’re ready to proceed!
At this point, you’ll have to give us the name of the person who will be present for your off-road vehicle’s pickup and dropoff appointments. You’ll also need to provide some information about your vehicle and give exact starting and ending locations to the driver.
While you won’t have to pay an upfront payment, do note that you’ll have to pay a $25 refundable deposit. We’ll only keep this amount if you decide not to go through with our services. Otherwise, we’ll deduct it from your total amount.
Have Your Off-Road Vehicle Picked Up
When a trucker is set to pick up your vehicle, you’ll receive both an email and call from us. You’ll receive information about approximately what date and time the driver will come to get your SxS.
While they’ll do their best to accommodate your needs, if the driver can’t reach your pickup location safely, they’ll arrange to meet you at the nearest parking lot.
Wherever you meet, you’ll have to go through an inspection of your off-road vehicle. Any preexisting damage is noted down.
You’ll then sign and receive a copy of the Bill of Lading. You’ll also be able to track your car online or contact the driver at any time while your vehicle is in transit.
Receive Your Vehicle at Your Destination
Once the trucker arrives at the destination, you’ll perform another inspection with them present. Current and preexisting damages will be compared, if there are any.
If everything’s all good, you’ll then sign and receive a copy of the Bill of Lading. Otherwise, the driver will fill an insurance claim for you to compensate for any damage.
